INTRODUCTION
Richard and Gray Miles, father and son, have been designing and installing brick and stone projects for over twenty five years. As Miles Stonework they have worked in many parts of the US in both urban and rural settings — on structural, restorative and decorative designs. They conceive of projects sculpturally and draw on the natural qualities of the existing topography and landscape to make their walls, terraces, walkways and chimneys feel grounded and harmonious. On restoration jobs, great care is taken to match weathered mortar, brick and stone.
MS works closely with the Maine Historic Preservation Commission and local organizations dedicated to preserving and maintaining historical buildings.
Below is a small selection from across the spectrum of MS’s projects.
Eastport Library Resoration, Eastport, Maine
This handsome Romanesque Revival library (built in 1893) faces the gulf of Maine and is subjected to salt-bearing winds that spall the brick and wear the mortar. In order to match the color of the mortar joints, ground brick dust was used.
Ruff Residence, Packer's Corner's, Vermont
This house site is situated on a pre-Revolutionary road lined with late-mature silver maples planted at the time of road construction. MS took the opportunity to echo the great trees in miniature using stones culled from a nearby brook.
Silverman Residence, Bailey's Mistake, Maine
For this job, granite slabs weighing multiple tons were harvested from an inland quarry. Their massiveness is muted and softened by herb plantings in the joints and by the connective tissue of smaller stones.
